Understanding the Jeep Wrangler PHEV Recall
In November 2023, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) announced a major recall involving 32,000 Jeep Wrangler PHEV models due to defective HV batteries that could overheat and catch fire. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued warnings, and FCA instructed owners to take the following precautions:
- Do not charge the vehicle until further notice.
- Avoid parking the vehicle inside garages, buildings, or nearby structures.
- Keep the vehicle away from other cars or flammable materials.
These guidelines severely restricted the Jeep Wrangler PHEV’s intended use as a hybrid, leaving owners with vehicles that could not perform as promised.
The Failed B9A Recall Fix
After months of waiting, FCA attempted a fix through the B9A recall repair process. Unfortunately, the repair was ineffective and was withdrawn shortly after implementation. This failure prolonged the frustration for owners who had hoped to regain full use of their vehicles.
Expanded Recall – 95B Recall
By September 27, 2024, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a new recall, Recall 95B. This expanded recall impacted approximately 190,000 vehicles, including both Jeep Wrangler PHEV and Grand Cherokee PHEV models.
Once again, owners were instructed not to charge their vehicles and to park them away from buildings and other vehicles.
The Impact on Jeep Wrangler PHEV Owners
For 6 to 16 months, many owners have faced:
- Limited or no use of their vehicles
- Ongoing safety concerns
- Decreased vehicle value
- Difficulty parking or storing vehicles
- Financial burden from additional transportation costs
This situation has left thousands of vehicle owners frustrated and seeking justice.
In addition to the recalls, several Class Action lawsuits have been filed against FCA.
According to one suit, Jeep Wrangler plug-in hybrids may have a defective propulsion system that leads to fires or explosions. The batteries used in these models, manufactured by Samsung, have a known history of fire risks.
The lawsuit claims that FCA’s actions put owners at unreasonable risk of injury, death, or property damage if their vehicle catches fire while in operation or parked.
Your Rights Under California Lemon Law
In California, consumers are protected under the Lemon Law if their vehicles have significant defects that cannot be repaired within a reasonable number of attempts. If your Jeep Wrangler PHEV has been affected by the recall, you may be entitled to:
- A vehicle replacement or full refund
- Reimbursement for repair expenses
- Compensation for loss of use
- Coverage of legal fees (Manufacturers are required to pay attorney fees in successful Lemon Law claims)
Even if your vehicle has undergone a repair attempt, you may still qualify for Lemon Law protections.
